The Grouch By Green Day: Musical Analysis
If you cant tell by now I love the punk-rock genre, and in my opinion The Grouch, by Green Day might be the second best punk song by them. Written by Billie Joe Armstrong, in there album labeled "Nimrod-1997" its rhythm combined with the melody makes a great setting for the lyrics. (Setting, as in its a great set up for the lyrics and blends really well.) Although not everyone thought this way; when the Album was released it wasn't very popular with critics, and fans. Nevertheless, The Grouch continues, still to this day as a bright spot in Green Days line up.
The Grouch, By Green Day -1997
Rhythm and Dynamics:
The rhythm Starts with a bang and doesn't really stop until the song ends, It slows down along with the dynamics, at the chorus, and then goes back to normal. I especially like the crash symbols on the 2 and 4 beat through out the song. it goes along with the lyrics really well. The dynamics change fairly consistently with the other musical elements and the pairing of the lyrics, rhythm and dynamics are splendid.
Melody:
The melody follows the rhythm quite well, and consistently impressed me. I love how after the breakdown towards the end of the song, it repeats the first part. I think the reason this is one of my favorite songs is the melody. as Ms.. Kljaich states in her elements of music video: The beat, rhythm, dynamics, and range can all contribute to the melody. For this song It all comes together nicely.
Beat:
The beat stays fairly consistent throughout the song and only changes at the chorus, and the breakdown. Tre Cool, (the drummer of Green Day,) did a fantastic job with the beat, the simple rock beat in 4/4 was a perfect foundation for the song.
Lyrics:
The Lyrics talk about the fear of aging, and how time goes by so fast. They also poke fun at the "Stereotypical "old Grouch" with the lyrics: "I've decomposed, yet my gut's getting fat, Oh my God, I'm turning out like my Dad, I'm always rude, I've got a bad attitude, The world owes me, so fuck you!" Another of my Personal favorite lyrics are: "Wasted youth, and a fistful of ideals, I had a young and optimistic point of view." Tying in to what I said earlier about how fast time goes by.
Conclusion:
The layered musical elements along with the imposing lyrics of Billie Joe, makes this my personal favorite song from this album. After Completing this musical Analysis I now have a further appreciation for this song, and all music in general.
